ARISE editor Helen Jennings was among those honoured at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa Awards 2012 on Sunday October 28 – the culminating event of the annual pan-African fashion extravaganza in Johannesburg. Jennings was selected in the Fashion Communicator of the Year category, while New York-based Mimi Plange won International Designer of the Year, Nigeria’s Ituen Basi took Designer of the Year, and Africa and Paris-based LaurenceAirline won International Emerging Designer of the Year.

“The Africa Fashion Awards rewards African fashion excellence using global industry criteria and recognises the exceptional talent of African industry members worldwide,” said African Fashion International (AFI) executive chairperson Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe. “The awards focuses not only on African and diaspora designers showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa but also acknowledges those making outstanding contributions to the industry in general.”

Highlights from the five-day event included shows by KLûK CGDT, Gavin Rajah, Maki Oh, Projecto Mental, Amine Bendriouich and Duaba Serwa. The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman was backstage snapping away and there were musical performances by Lira and Lindiwe Suttle.
