Words Hauwa Mukan
Before AMFW 2012 kicked off, we grabbed five minutes with US designer LaQuan Smith to find out what to expect from his catwalk collection.
Describe your AMFW 2012 collection It is a futuristic take on a woman who's international but originally from New York. So I've used PVC, vinyl and transparent mirrored textures to create this futuristic look. It´s fun and edgy, everything the brand represents. It´s this universal woman who´s taking on this 2020 New York journey.

What is your label's aesthetic? Keep it modern. The label is called LQS for short: luxury, quality and sensuality. I think I have a sensibility to keep things super sexy and not take it too seriously. Women wear my clothes and feel excited, secure and happy. I like to make them feel really good.
What other designers´collections are you loking forward to seeing? The Mataano twins and Angelo Van Mol, I love his clothes!
African fashion is... about expression and individuality, coming from a place that needs to be heard and seen. I'm taken aback by the work of Nigerian and African-based designers. I'm inspired by their point of view and their style, it´s beautiful.
