While we were in New York for our show for Mercedes Benz NYFW, we met, shot and were totally charmed by the one and only Tyra Banks. Watch the queen bee of America's Next Top Model work her stuff in front of the lens and get the lowdown on the shoot from the team...

Styling: Ty-Ron Mayes

Backstage at the ARISE Tyra Banks cover shoot, stylist Ty-Ron Mayes is singing the praises of fashion's latest curveball shape. "I'm in love with the peplum," says Mayes. "Any jacket or dress that has a peplum hides a multitude of little things, at the same time it really accentuates curves and gives you a lot of style."

Mayes, who first worked with Tyra in 1995, is full of style tips for those who want to get Tyra's timeless look: "I always tell women to get a beautiful trench coat. It's something that can go from season to season. For this season I like prints and I like the idea of print on print, so printed jeans with printed blouses or jackets. Don't be afraid to mix them up."

Beauty: Valenté Frazier

Meanwhile for Valenté Frazier, shoot make-up artist, it's all about creating the perfect 'natural' look. "The cover shoot is black and white so we wanted to keep the skin really fresh looking, but also add a little contour to really bring out Tyra's cheekbones and a very light, natural looking smoke to bring focus to the eye," he says. "The cover look is finished with a soft pinky brown lip, a very full, defined brow and two coats of jet black mascara."

So what are his top beauty tips? "Always less is more. A tinted moisturiser for sheer coverage, with a concealer under the eyes and on any blemishes or discoloration, is a much more natural look than all over foundation," says Frazier. The perfect 'natural' look is all about blending, he adds: "whether it's foundation, concealer, eye shadow or blush, always make sure that it's blended perfectly – that creates a seamless finish."

Hair: Sher Rae

Hairstylist Sher Rae has also gone for minimal glamour for the cover shoot: "It's a strong look, the hair is a softened version of a Mohawk, or a faux hawk, that people can relate to –so it's something a little cool, but not too super fierce," says Rae.

It's a look that works on straight or curly hair and is relatively easy to recreate. "It's just a matter of pulling the hair back, and doing some back-combing in the centre crown of the head. I used just one hairpin to pull back the sides," says Rae. But whatever you do, don't mistake this look for a beehive: "It's sleeker at the sides and more severe".
